Estavayer-le-Lac is often called "the city of the Rose". In our Old Town you can admire a symphony of hybrid and climbing roses on the centuries-old walls of the city during the summer months.
In 1992, the French society of the Friends of the Rose provided 79 beds and a pergola of 31 climbing roses along the road from the beach.
In 2005, a memorial display with the newly created rose named Thérèse Meyer was inaugurated in honor of Mrs. Thérèse Meyer, President of the National Council and Member of Parliament.
July 1, 2005, a second rose display with the ELSA Rose was planted to celebrate the Jubilee of the firm ELSA SA.
The gardeners of our city care for more than 4,000 rose plants through the year. This emphasizes the commitment our city has to this legendary flower. At the end of June 2011, one of the members of our city council visited an exhibition entitled the Week of the Rose, in Bischofszell. The idea was conceived to do a similar exhibition in our city in 2013. Therefore, we are currently preparing the Rose Festival for the weekend of June 22-23, 2013. The festivities will be centered around our beautiful medieval castle, Le Château de Chenaux with its market square, as well as, the ancient cobble stone streets of the old town.
The aim of the Festival is to make the different varieties of roses known by exhibitions, conferences, sales of plants, cultivation and proliferation techniques of roses and by doing so, call attention to our "City of the Rose City" in French-speaking Switzerland. Commodity derivatives around the theme of the rose such as pastries, chocolates, syrups, jams, sorbets, roses Marzipan, floral arrangement workshop, ceramics, candles, embroidery cosmetics, perfumes, soaps and craftsmen such as potters, and weavers, will be associated with this event. Naturally, there will be musical entertainment with live music. Contests will be organized with prizes for the most beautiful flower-filled window, photos and drawings, as well as a tour through 13 beds of roses.
In Estavayer-le-Lac, The City of the Rose, we look forward to your visit on June 22 and 23.
